APAS Flashcards
● An autoimmune disease characterized by the
production of antiphospholipid antibodies.
● Associated with pregnancy complications that
include:
○ Fetal loss
○ Fetal growth restriction
○ Preeclampsia
○ Thrombosis
ANTIPHOSPHOLIPID ANTIBODY SYNDROME (APAS)
1.) DVT of the lower extremities
2.) Stroke
1.) Venous Event
2.) Arterial Event
Clinical and laboratory
criteria without other
recognized autoimmune
disease.
Primary antiphospholipid Syndrome
With other autoimmune
disorders such as SLE
(systemic lupus
erythematosus).
Secondary Antiphospholipid Syndrome
RISK FACTORS
● Having an autoimmune condition, such as systemic
lupus erythematosus or Sjogren’s syndrome.
● Having certain infections, such as syphilis,
HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C or Lyme disease.
● Preeclampsia prior to 34 weeks’, and severe
preeclampsia requiring premature delivery.
● Infertility and pregnancy complications such as
spontaneous abortions, prematurity, and stillbirths.
MATERNAL IMPLICATIONS
● Fetal growth restriction
● Preterm delivery for maternal severe preeclampsia
or fetal growth restriction.
FETAL IMPLICATIONS
INDICATIONS FOR TESTING FOR aPL ANTIBODIES
● Obstetric indications
● Unexplained fetal death or stillbirth
● Recurrent pregnancy loss (3 or more
spontaneous abortions with no more than 1 live
birth)
1.) IgG or IgM antibodies present at moderate to high levels in the blood on 2 or more occasions at least 6 weeks apart.
2.) Are detected in the blood on 2 or more occasions at least 6 weeks apart. False-positive results from the VDRL
test.
1.) Anticardiolipin antibodies
2.) Lupus anticoagulant antibodies
