● A bacterial infection that affects the urinary tract &
bladder
● Common medical complication of pregnancy
● Coliform organisms
● Most common: Escherichia Coli
URINARY TRACT INFECTION
COMMON UTIs
● Asymptomatic Bacteriuria
● Cystitis
● Pyelonephritis
○ dysuria
○ urgency & frequency of urination
○ lower abdominal or suprapubic pain
○ microscopic or gross hematuria may also be
present
TREATMENT:
● Antibiotic therapy
● Antibiotic often prescribed:
○ Amoxicillin
○ Ampicillin
○ Cephalexin (Keflex)
CYSTITIS
● The persistent presence of bacteria within the
urinary tract of women who have no symptoms
● Usually present in pregnant women
TREATMENT:
● Single-dose or 3-. 7-, & 10-day treatment of
antibiotic
● Antibiotics often prescribed:
○ Amoxicillin
○ Ampicillin
○ Cephalexin (Keflex)
ASYMPTOMATIC BACTERIURIA
Upper UTI
● Renal/kidney infection
● Usually caused by the E. coli organism
● Develops only in the right kidney in more than half
of all cases
TREATMENT:
● Antibiotic Therapy
○ Oral antibiotics: amoxicillin-clavulanic acid
(Augmentin) trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole
(Bactrim DS)
