What is Anorexia nervosa?
A psychological disorder, in which there is a relentless pursuit of thinness.
How does a person with anorexia nervosa view themselves?
Overweight despite evidence of normal or low body weight
What is the classification for anorexia nervosa?
- BMI of 17.5 or less
* 15% below the ideal body weight
What methods do people with anorexia nervosa use to reduce weight?
- Restricting calorie intake
- Over-exercise
- Use of laxatives or diuretics
- Vomiting
What is the criteria for the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa?
- Restriction of energy intake relative to requirements leading to a significantly low body weight in the context of age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical health.
- Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight.
- Disturbance in the way in which one’s body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of the current low body weight.
What are the physical presentations of anorexia nervosa?
- Low BMI
- Hypotension
- Bradycardia
- Enlarged salivary glands
- Lanugo hair (fine hair covering the skin)
- Amenorrhoea
What are the biochemical presentations in anorexia nervosa?
- Hypokalaemia
- Low sex hormone levels (FSH, LH, oestrogen and testosterone)
- Raised growth hormone and cortisol levels
- Hypercholesterolaemia
What scan should you always do on someone when admitted with anorexia nervosa?
ECG
Why should you do an ECG in someone with anorexia nervosa?
They are at risk of prolonged QT syndrome which can cause ventricular fibrillation
What is the name of the questionnaire used on anorexic patients?
SCOFF questionnaire
What symptoms might present in a young person with anorexia nervosa?
Failure of development of secondary sexual characteristics
What is a major complication that can occur when treating a patient with anorexia nervosa?
Refeeding syndrome
What are the symptoms of refeeding syndrome
?
Oedema
Confusion
Tachycardia
What metabolic disturbances occur with refeeding syndrome?
Low potassium
