What is the period of social history from 1650-1775 called?
the Ancien Regime (French)
What is aristocratic life like in the Ancien Regime?
full control, rich from taxes and land rent, exempt from taille and corvee, and had right to bear arms
French taille and corvee?
Taille is land tax
Corvee is forced labor on public works and, for renters, unpaid labor to landowners
What is peasant life like in the Ancien Regime?
Malnourished despite New World and other agricultural advances
poor and highly inequal
married in mid 20s
suffered since medicine wasn’t developed
What did doctors do at this time?
Basically nothing. Told you what the problem was, but couldn’t cure it
What caused particular problems in France for peasants?
They had such low incomes that they had to rent land at high prices. Also had to work a corvee then

harshest lives. Peter/Catherine the Great gave nobles total control over serfs. Currency was often “souls”
What is different in the west than the east in regard to peasant control?
Russia had serfs, but often English and French peasants were free (although still renting because they were broke)
