Fungal culture
Early color change is followed by dermatophyte growth
Dermatophytes: change of color to red within 3-14d
Contaminant fungi: change of color after 10-14d
Examine culture daily for first 10d

Macroscopic exam of colony
Microscopic appearence of the macro - and microconidia

Tape to colony surface
Place sticky side down w lactophenol cotton blue
Examine at 10-40x magn
Skin biopsy
Required diagnosis for:
Neoplasia
Autoimmune skin disease
Dermatomyositis
Sebaceous adenitis
Zinc-responsive dermatosis
Follicular dysplasia
Skin biopsy useful
Some parasitic (dermoidicosis)
Bacteria (mycobacteria)
Fungal (deep) skin diseases
Sterile dermatosis
Paraneoplastic syndromes
Ruling out some differential diagnosis
When to biopsy
History /clinical exam suggest a dermatosis which requires histo pathological diagnosis
When reasoned diagnostic approach has not produced a diagnosis
Treatment has failed, disease requires a treatment with potential significant side effects
Nodular, ulcerative, vesicular lesions
