Describe the functioning once the projectile strikes the target?

A

When the projectile strikes a target the five piezo-electric crystals convert the shock of impact into electrical energy

Providing the impact is of sufficient strength, the current generated will pass through the four layer diode via the contact piece and function the electric detonator in the rotor

The detonator output functions the booster pellets, which then function the main HE filling

Q

If you were to encounter a UXO 84mm HEAT
Projectile, there are certain safety precautions which
you must apply. What are they and why must they be
applied?

A

What: Do not allow a shadow to fall across the projectile or attempt to destroy the UXO during periods of suddenly alternating sunshine and shade that would cause a 2 C change in projectile
temperature.

Why . A Piezo electric element stressed by impact is susceptible to changes
in temperature. Rapid change of 2 C or more could cause a surge of
electrical current sufficient to function the projectile.

43
Q

Function of the 84mm Illum 545

Operation From firing

A

When the firing mechanism of the weapon is operated, the firing pin strikes the primer resulting in the priming composition being crushed against the anvil and causing it to ignite. The flame produced flashes through to the ignition composition causing it to ignite. This increases the flame size and temperature sufficiently to ignite the main propellant charge. The burning propellant produces a large quantity of hot gas that acts on the base of the projectile. The pressure builds until it is sufficient to overcome the case to projectile crimp. At this point the projectile is driven forward down the barrel of the weapon causing the driving band to become engaged in the rifling of the barrel and imparting spin to the projectile. Once the projectile leaves the barrel, the spin will provide stability during flight. At the same time that the projectile starts to move forward, the pressure of the propellant gases acting on the base plate of the cartridge case causes the plate to be expelled. This allows a controlled bleed of gas rearwards to act against the forces moving forward and thereby reducing the recoil on the user of the weapon.

On firing, setback forces are generated by the rapid acceleration of the projectile forward. This force pushes the hammer, containing the detonator, against a spring and into the firing pin, causing it to function. The flame generated passes through the flash channel in the arming and firing mechanism to the igniter composition creating ignition. The burning igniter composition then starts the delay composition burning. At the completion of the delay the flame initiates the booster pellets. The flame from the burning pellets passes down a flash channel and initiates the expelling charge in the base of the fuze. The expelling charge produces a large volume of gas that forces against the illuminating canister. This force is transmitted through the canister to the parachute and then to the projectile base. Once sufficient pressure is reached, the pins retaining the projectile base in position are sheared and the canister, parachute and projectile base are expelled from the body of the projectile. During this process the hot gas also burns through the thin metal of the canister and ignites the illuminating composition below. The parachute then ejects and plumes from the body as the half casings are stripped away by wind force. The retarding effect of the parachute slows the decent of the burning illuminate to approximately 5 metres per second. The composition continues to burn for approximately 30 seconds.

44
Q

What must be removed from the cap before firing?

A

Rubber hood and safety pin

45
Q

Function of the 84mm Illum 545

Operation Before Firing

A

Prior to firing, the rubber hood and then the safety pin are removed from the fuze. The safety pin or the setting key is then used to set the fuze to the desired burst range. The round can then be loaded to the weapon. To fire the round the firer must angle the weapon at the required elevation. At all ranges between 500 and 1800 metres the elevation is 20 degrees. At short ranges of 300 to 400 metres and long ranges of 1900 to 2300 metres an angle of 25 degrees must be used. Both elevations provide the correct burst height of 200 metres above the ground at the selected range. The two elevations can be obtained by means of a luminous pendulum flare sight that is easily attached to the telescopic sight of the weapon.
