2. Illuminating - Signal & Tracer Compositions Flashcards
What is the role of Illuminating Compositions
a. To provide a steady source of light to to illuminate targets for visual or photographic reconnaissance purposes.
b. Provide coloured signals which are identifiable against difficult backgrounds at considerable distances.
c. Provide fillings suitable for use as tracers in SAA and other direct fire ammunition.
What are the 2 purposes of dark ignition?
- To avoid observation by the enemy (of the exact location of the weapon)
- To avoid dazzling the firers at night
What is the role of Signal Composition?
To transmit concise messages through the atmosphere over considerable distances
What are the 2 types of signal composition?
Produce a light of distinctive colour
Produce coloured smoke
What are the 4 design requirements for the Tracer Composition?
Luminosity
Strength
Consistency of performance
Ease of ignition
Most common colour producers
Red - Strontium Nitrate Yellow - Sodium Nitrate Green - Barium Nitrate Blue - Copper Carbonate White - Barium nitrate/potassium nitrate mixture Orange - Calcium Nitrate
What are the design requirements for illuminating compositions?
Burn for the required time
Have the appropriate luminosity
With firing forces ie tracer
