Describe function of HE hand Grenade (eg. F1)
- Removal of the safety pin permits release of the safety lever. When the safety lever is released, it is forced away from the grenade body by a striker acting under the force of a striker spring. The striker rotates on its axis and strikes the percussion primer. The M42 primer is a sensitive pyrotechnic that once struck by the striker ignites and produces flame and heat energy. The flame and heat energy is directed through the hollowed centre of the fuze body to the surface face of the delay composition.
- The delay composition is a pyrotechnic mixture that is designed to burn at a predetermined rate and thus provides a specified time delay according to the type of composition and the length of the delay composition. The primer ignites the delay element, which burns for 5 ± 0.5 seconds (at 21ºC), then functions the detonator. The detonation of the fuze results in the RDX charge within the detonator rupturing the detonator case and passing the detonation wave onto the booster pellet. The booster pellet is a type TR1SG energetic that is fitted around the fuze well in close proximity to the RDX charge within the detonator. The booster pellet amplifies the detonation wave accepted from the detonator and passes it onto the grenade main charge. The main charge is an RDX based secondary explosive that when detonated within the grenade, causes fragmentation of the grenade body along with the steel ball matrix. These fragments are expelled rapidly.

From firing to barrel exit
- Firing pin strikes primer
- Primer ignites the propellant charge contained with the propellant cup
- Propellant cup ruptures and the gas enters the low pressure chamber forcing the projectile from the CC
- ## The action of the projectile moving through the barrel imparts approx 3,750 rpm of spin
F1 Fuze Description
The Striker Housing Assembly, as shown in Figure 4, consists of a moulded olive green coloured plastic striker housing which is threaded to mate with the open end of the grenade body, a striker assembly with striker spring and pivot pin, a safety lever and a safety pin assembly.
A spring-loaded striker is mounted in the housing and rotates on the pivot pin. The lever holds down the striker. At one end, the lever hooks under lugs on the housing.
Above the striker, the lever is further restrained by the lower leg of the safety pin, which is held in two small holes. The safety pin is mechanically locked in place by the hooked extension of the upper leg.
The pull ring is locked flat in place on top of the housing in a notch between the two lugs as part of the housing. The housing assembly contains no explosive composition.

M549 PIBD Fuze (for M430A1)
- Prior to firing, the detonator in the fuze rotor is held out of line by the position of the setback pin against the rotor and gear assembly.
- Upon firing, setback force frees the rotor from the pin.
- The spin of the projectile causes the safety spring assembly to disengage from the rotor and gear assembly.
- The detonator then begins to move toward the armed position under the influence of centrifugal force on the eccentrically located rotor.
- The movement of the rotor and gear assembly is resisted by an escapement mechanism, providing the required time delay in the arming of the fuze.
- The detonator reaches the armed position when the projectile has travelled a distance of 18 to 40 meters from the launcher.
- Upon impact with the target, the firing pin is driven into the detonator.
- The effect of the detonator initiates the spitback charge producing a jet which in turn initiates the main charge.
- Detonation of the main charge provides both the armour piercing effect of the shaped charge and fragmentation of the steel body.
