DB 22-02 High Visibility Vest Flashcards
Due to the reflective nature of the High Visibility Vest (HVV), the wearer is more visible to motorists __________.
-at all times of the day
-especially during night and low visibility situations (i.e., dusk, rain, fog).
Both FEDERAL and STATE regulation require the use of an HVV while working on:
-highways
-freeways
-public ways
-anytime exposed to vehicular traffic on foot.
The HVV may be worn anytime a member feels it is necessary to do so.
However, the safety vest SHALL be worn during the following and PRIOR to EXITING the apparatus, anytime a member is actively working on traffic/highway/roadway incidents:
• Directing traffic around an accident scene or fire incident
• Aiding a stranded motorist
• Attending to injured and/or ill patients IN VEHICLES directly adjacent to moving traffic (i.e., EMS incidents)
• Performing functions during apparatus backing operations (i.e., blocking traffic with heavy apparatus)
Fire Department members are often faced with competing hazards on roadway incidents. The safety vest SHALL NOT be worn during the following:
• Fire suppression activities
• Physical rescue/extrication
• Hazardous materials mitigation measures
• Activities in Immediate Dangerous to Life and Health environments (IDLH)
• Incidents that require immediate action from responding personnel to effect lifesaving measures
• Any incident by wearing the vest, places the firefighter at a personal risk level greater than the potential risk of exposure to traffic conditions
(when work is downscaling or complete, immediately don the vest while actively working on the roadway or highway.)
The HVV is made of 100% polyester material with _____-point breakaway design to minimize the risk of becoming entangled in equipment and allowing for greater mobility in critical situations. The silver reflective tape is 2”.
5 point
When not in use, the high visibility vest folds into a convenient storage pouch that is attached to the inside of the garment.
Where shall the vest be stored when not in use?
In the cab area of apparatus
If damaged, defaced, faded, torn, or if it is not visible at _____ feet, the HVV shall be sent to the Supply and Maintenance Division for replacement.
1,000 feet
The primary goal of the HVV is to?
-decrease the potential of a firefighter being struck by vehicles
-continue our commitment to a “culture of safety.”
The vest may be washed in warm water and ____ dried only.
DO NOT USE BLEACH. DO NOT DRY CLEAN OR IRON.
