Benefits of Social Media Tools
When used in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies as well as prudent operational, security, and privacy considerations, web-based social media tools can (at little to no cost):
-Enhance the speed, reach, and targeting of communications, particularly during disaster/emergency incidents
-Facilitate collaboration
-Improve information exchange between residents and employees
-Increase citizen engagement and dialogue
-Streamline processes
-Foster productivity improvements
-Increase the Department’s ability to broadcast messages to the widest possible audience (local, regional, national, and global).
No Department member may establish a social media account in the name of or on behalf of the Department, a Bureau or subdivision unless:
a) The employee first completes a “Social Media Request Form;”
b) The Public Information Director, the Social Media Director, the Chief of Staff, and the user’s Bureau or Section Chief have each approved the creation of said account
c) All information to be posted on the account is approved in accordance with the Social Media Policy.
Approved Department social media accounts are to be used for Department business purposes only.

Department members are expected to comply with all City and Department polices, as well as the following standards, when using PERSONAL social media accounts:
- Department members have no right to privacy respecting their use of social media or personal social media accounts, or the content of such accounts, when accessed by means of CITY INFORMATION SYSTEMS.
- Postings and user profiles on personal social media accounts must not state or imply that they are of the LAFD, or represent the views of the Department or any Department member in their official capacity, UNLESS the FIRE CHIEF or a designee thereof has granted express permission for that user to do so.
- If a Department member is not an authorized social media user, any user profile or posting on a personal social media account that identifies that person as a Department member must include a qualifying statement in substantially the following form: “The views I express on this site are my own and do not reflect any official view or position of the LAFD.”
