cystoisospora canis Flashcards
phylum
apicomplexa
order
eucoccidiorida- parasite of epithelial cells
common name
coccidia
hosts
dogs
paratenic hosts
rodents
cat species parasite
cystoisospora felis/ rivolta
how many cells do unsporulated oocysts have?
one
have many sporocystes are in each sporulated oocyst?
2 sporocysts each with 4 sporozoites
size
50 micrometers
sporulation phase
unsporulated oocyst pass in feces
sporulation takes place outside the host
sporulated oocysts is the infective stage
how does a dog get infected?
from eating the tissues of rodents infected with asexual stages
what are the three phases of formation?
sporulation, schizogony and gametogony and oocyst formation
what is the infective stage?
sporulated oocyst
what happens when a paratenic host ingest the oocyst?
sporozoites released invade the tissues and organs to form a cyst. when paratenic host and cysts are ingested by final host the sporozoites are released from the cyst in the final host
what is the asexual reproduction called?
schizogony
what is the sexual reproduction called?
gametogony and oocyst formation
schizogony phase
asexual phase- definitive host becomes infected by ingesting sporulated oocyst.
each sporocyst releases 4 sporozoites
each sporozoite gives rise to a shizont containing merozoites
merozoites ruputer out of the intestinal cell, enter another cell and become another generation of shizont
gametogony phase
sexual phase- merozoites give rise to male and female gametocysts. fusion and fertilization of micro and macro gametes take place and a cyst wall forms
results in a zygote , now and oocyst
unsporulated oocyst passes in feces
what are the female gametocysts?
macrogametocystes- unicellular but increase in size
they have a single large nucleus
what are the male gametocysts
microgametocytes- undergo repeated division to form flagellated microgametes
PPP
4-11 days
site of infection
small intestine
pathogenesis
small intestinal cells destroyed
clinical signs
asymptomatic, except young dogs have diarrhea
diagnosis
fecal flotation
treatment
management is critical
