Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Olfactory
Special Sense- carries sense of smell from olfactory epithelium
Optic Nerve
Special Sense
Carries visual impulses from rods and cones on retina to visual cortex of brain
Oculomotor
Somitic Sense
Motor Supply to:
Superior medial and inferior rectus muscles
inferior oblique
levator palpebrae superioris
Also, autonomic motor supply to ciliary body=sphincter p upillae
Trochlear Nerve
Somitic Nerve
Motor supply to superior oblique muscle of eye
Trigeminal Nerve
Branchial Arch
Sensory: great nerve of general sense from face ie touch, pressure
motor: motor supply to all 1st brachial arch muscles
Abducens Nerve
Somitic Nerve
Motor Supply to lateral rectus of eye
Facial Nerve
Branchial Arch
Sensory: anterior 2/3’s of taste buds on tongue and outer ear
Motor: great motor nerve of face; all 2nd Branchial muscles
Also, autonomic supply to lacrimal gland the submandibular and sublingual salivary gland
Vestibulocochlear Nerve
Special Sense
Carries sensory input from hair cells of cochlea for hearing and input from hair cells of vestibular system that monitor head motion and equilibrium
Glossopharyngeal Nerve
Branchial Nerve:
Sensory: carries taste of posterior 1/3 of taste buds on tongue; monitors pH and bp
Motor: innervates stylopharyngeus muscle of 3rd brachial arch; also, autonomic supply to parotid salivary gland
Vagus Nerve
Branchial Nerve:
Sensory: Mucosal sensation from pharynx to first half of large intestine, respiratory passages
Motor: supply to all muscles of 4th-6th Branchial arch
Also autonomic supply to smooth muscle of intestinal tract; and slows heart
Accessory Nerve
Branchial Arch:
Motor supply to posterior arch muscles.
Hypoglossal Nerve
Somitic:
Motor supply to both intrinsic and tongue muscles.
