What are three major categories of a Developmental
Counseling?
- Event Counseling (involves a specific event or
situation) - Performance Counseling (review of a subordinate’s
duty performance during a specified period) - Professional Growth Counseling (planning for the
accomplishment of individual and professional goals)
To be effective, counselors must have these basic counseling
skills, what are they?
- Active Listening
- Responding
- Appropriate questioning
Effective Army leaders use a four-stage counseling process,
what are they?
- Identify the need for counseling
- Prepare for counseling
- Conduct the counseling session
- Follow-up
What four qualities should leaders must demonstrate to
counsel effectively?
- Respect
- Self-awareness
- Credibility
- Empathy
As a leader there are several approaches to counseling you
can take; what are they and describe each
(Directive, non-directive, combined)
Direct: You, the leader do most of the talking and
establish the solution (plan of action) for the Soldier.
Non-Direct: You, the leader encourage Soldier
interaction (conversation) all them to come up with their
own solution (plan of action) to any issues.
Combined: Some portions of the counseling session you
use the direct approach and other parts use the non-
direct approach.
What form is used for counseling?
DA form 4856
