Construction Technology and Environmental Services Flashcards

1
Q

What is a critical dimension, how would enforce this?

A

A measurement made that distinctively positions something so components go together in accepted tolerances. This is tolerance was made within the preliminaries to ensure that the size of the WC is achieved with regards to accessible WC.

Q

What construction details did you choose for the wall?

A

I chose to proceed with blockwork walls with a lightweight timber roof lid. This was the cheapest solution that provided an area of work with fire compartmentation of 30minutes and strength.

Q

What are you required to do for Part M Accessible WC?

A
  • Ensure turning circle for wheelchair user.
  • Unisex purpose.
  • Provide one in at least each area that is accessible.
  • Wash and dry hands while seated.
  • Support rails and pull cord on separate walls.
  • 2200mm x 1500mm and doors opening outwards.

Q

What lead did you propose for the flashings?

A

I proposed code 5 lead to be embedded into the wall with soakers and mortar pointing. The membrane is to go on the underside of this.

Q

What is a cold roof, with advantages and disadvantages?

A

Insulation is located below the deck, with a vapour barrier on the inside. This results in the deck getting cold. This is a cheap method, construction is easily done and a shallow roof depth. However, potential movement between structural deck and covering. Ventilation is required if a timber deck.

Q

What is a warm roof, with advantages and disadvantages?

A

Insulation on top of the deck with waterproof membrane above and vapour barrier below. This protects the deck from movement more and tapering insulation. Upgrades are easily managed. The membrane is exposed to damage from walking.

Q

What is a inverted roof, with advantages and disadvantages?

A

Insulation is above the waterproof membrane with ballast or tiles above to protect. This is easily replaceable and protects the deck underneath although expensive. Difficult to detect leaks, potential insulation damage and is costly.

Q

How do you find the leak on inverted roof?

A

Tracing through heat, or dye although this may cause internal problems.

Q

What materials may you use on a flat roof?

A
  • EPDM Rubber roofing (sturdy, installation expensive and time consuming.
  • Single Ply Modern Bitumen flat roof on single ply (cheap & repairs easy, tearing and covering required to reflect heat)
  • GRP (resists moisture and durable, expensive and not useful large roofs)
  • Polyurethane Liquid applied roofing (single coat and high tensile, not best finish and life expectancy not proven)

Q

What are the benefits of using a Structural Insulated Panel?

A

Insulation is typically more efficient as created in an airtight conditions. Cost for labour out of site is cheaper, having an effect on prelims and labour on site, speed is of preference due to the weather not causing delays. The preference can also be versatile with construction. Although constructed on site has easier transport, typically cheaper, less time with design & engineering, minimising nominated sub contractors so risk minimised.
