connective tissues Flashcards
general function of c.t??
connect different tissues, relatively few cells embedded in lots of matrix
what is matrix?
is a protein fibre and a ground substance
what are fibroblasts?
cells the secrete fibres and matrix
functions of c.t?
form structural framework of body, transport, protect/cushion, support/connect, storage, defence
what are the three types of c.t?
c.t proper, fluid c.t, supporting c.t
what are the characteristics of c.t proper?
most widespread, variety of cells including fibroblasts and immune cells, contains lots of protein fibre (collagen, elastic, reticular)
what are the characteristics of cartilage?
rubbery matrix with lots of collagen fibres , cells = chondrocytes, cushioning and flexible support
what does avascular mean?
no blood supply
what are the characteristics of bone tissue?
mineral matrix with calcium salts and hardest c.t, collagen fibre=flexible, cells are osteocytes, has blood vessels and nerves
functions of the bone tissue?
supports/protects organs, muscle attachment, mineral storage(calcium and phosphate)
characteristics of blood?
fluid matrix called plasma, cells are erythrocytes, leukocytes, thrombocytes
functions of blood?
transports gases, nutrients, waste, hormones, electrolytes, water
what are the characteristics of membranes?
sheet or partition in body, formed by epithelial tissue and connective tissue
what are the four types of membranes?
mucous, serous, synovial, cutaneous
all about mucous membrane?
line passages that communicate with exterior, respiratory and gastrointestinal, have goblet cells, simple columnar + areolar c.t
