CONNECTIVE TISSUES Flashcards
messenchyme connective tissue- ID
loose network of wispy mesenchymal cells embedded in gelatinous ground substance.
messenchyme connective tissue- location
fetal connective tissue
messenchyme connective tissue- function
gives rise to cardiac, and smooth muscle, cartilage, bone, and blood.
Areolar CT
loose arrangement of collagenous and elastic fibers, scattered cells of various types abundant ground substance numerous blood vessels
Areolar CT- location
underlying nearly all epithelia surrounding blood vessels, nerves, esophagus and trachea. fasciae between muscles, messenteries, visceral layers of pericardium and pleura
Areolar CT- function
loosely binds epithelia to deeper tissues, allows passage of nerves and blood vessels through other tissues provides an arena for immune defense provides nutrients and waste removal for overlying epithelia
Adipose CT
dominated by adipocytes large empty looking cells
Adipose CT- location
fat beneath skin, breast, heart surface, mesenteries, surround kidney and eye
Adipose CT- function
energy storage thermal insulation, protective cushion, filling space and shaping body
Reticular CT
loose network of reticular fibers and cells, infiltrated with numerous lymphocytes and other blood cells
Reticular CT- location
lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow
Reticular CT- function
supportive stroma (framework) for lymphatic organs
Dense regular white fibrous CT
densely packed, parallel, often wavy collagen fibers, slender fibroblast nuclei compressed between collagen bundles, scanty open space (ground substance) scarcity of blood vessels
Dense regular white fibrous CT- location
tendons and ligaments
Dense regular white fibrous CT- function
ligaments tightly bind bones together and resist stress, tendons attach muscle to bone and move the bones when the muscles contract
