axial skeleton
80 bones, forms longitudinal axis of the body. supports head neck and trunk. protects the brain spine and organs inside the thorax
fetal skull
skull bones are incomplete
fontanels
fibrous membranes in gaps between cranial bones (soft spots), anterior, posterior, sphenoid, and mastoid. all closed by 24 months. unossified remnants of fibrous membranes allow infants head to be compressed during childbirth and they accomodate brain growth
anterior fontanel
found between frontal and parietal bones
posterior fontanel
between occipital and 2 parietal
sphenoidal fontanel
junction where temporal, parietal, frontal, and sphenoid come together
mastoid fontanel
parietal, occipital, and temporal come together (mastoid process)
mandible
two bones at birth fuse at midline to form one bone by 3 yrs old
skull
22 bones joined by sutures. cranial and facial
neurocranium
enclose the brain, base and calvaria
viscerocranium
facial bones, develop from pharyngeal arches
foramina
holes where nerves and blood vessels pass
cranium
divided into vault and base. functions enclose and protect the brain;
