Compendium 2 (Tissues) Flashcards
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue?
- Skeletal
- Cardiac
- Smooth
What is the function of muscle tissue?
Responsible for tension and body movements.
What are 4 functions of skeletal muscle?
- Heat regulation
- Metabolism
- Posture
- Breathing
What is skeletal muscle?
Muscles attached to the bones of the skeleton.
What are muscle cells called?
Muscle fibres or myofibres
Which of the 3 types of muscle is involved in voluntary movement?
Skeletal muscle - can also have involuntary movements like twitches
Where is cardiac muscle found?
Only in the walls of the heart.
What is the name for cardiac muscle cells?
Cardiomyocytes
What are the 2 functions of the cardiac muscle?
- Generates pressure to push blood through the vessels.
- Change the rate of the force to meet metabolic needs of the body.
What are the 3 cellular layers for the wall of the heart?
- Epicardium (visceral pericardium)
- Myocardium
- Endocarcium
What are the 2 functions of smooth muscle?
- regulates the size of the organ/tube
- moves contents of organ along.
Where is smooth muscle mostly found? Provide 3 examples.
Mainly found in the walls of hollow organs and tubes.
- Stomach 2. Bladder 3. Intestines.
Which 2 muscle types have striations?
Cardiac and Skeletal
Which muscle type has lots of mitochondria in it?
Cardiac muscle
What type of nuclei does skeletal muscle have?
Peripheral nuclei (on the edges of each tube)
