Compendium 10 (Endocrine System) Flashcards
What is endocrine?
Endocrine is produced by cells of endocrine glands, enter circulatory system, and
affect distant cells.
What is the endocrine system?
Glands that secrete chemical messengers (hormones) into circulatory system
(blood)
What are the three types of hormone secretion?
- Acute
- Chronic
- Episodic
What is acute hormone secretion?
A sudden release of hormones due to stimulus (e.g., adrenaline in response to stress)
What is chronic hormone secretion?
Small variations in secretion over long periods (e.g., thyroid hormones)
What is an example of episodic hormone secretion?
Estrogen & progesterone during menstrual cycle
Why do target cells respond to hormones?
Because they have the correct type of receptor for the hormone
What are three characteristics of hormones?
- Produced in small quantities
- Transported some distance in circulatory system
- Acts on target tissues elsewhere in body
What are three functions of the endocrine system?
- Metabolism
- Tissue maturation
- Immune system regulation
What are the three endocrine glands in the head?
- Pineal gland
- Hypothalamus
- Pituitary gland
What are the three endocrine glands inferior to the head and superior to the abdomen?
- Thyroid gland
- Parathyroid glands
- Thymus gland
What are the two endocrine glands inside the abdominal cavity superior to the intestines?
- Adrenal glands
- Pancreas
What are the male, and female endocrine glands proximal to the groin?
Ovaries (female)
Testis (men)
What are three ways the endocrine system is similar to the nervous system?
- Both systems associated with the brain (endocrine – hypothalamus)
- May use same chemical messenger as neurotransmitter and hormone.
- Two systems are cooperative
What is one chemical messenger used as a neurotransmitter and a hormone?
Epinephrine
