= the process of running sport for a profit
Why use commercialisation? (5)

- Increase awareness of brand
- Increase sales
- Easily cover costs of of sponsorship

Sport = relies on the money generated through the media and sponsorship. Used to improve the sport/individual
Explain media in golden triangle?
Media = Pay huge amounts for tv rights but make money back through charing subscriptions and big c deals
Explain sponsorship in golden triangle?
Sponsorship = pay large amounts to media to advertise their products but make money back through sale of their goods
Advantages of commercialism to the performer? (4)
- Free clothing and equipment or payment for wearing the clothing
- Performer are literally paid money to advertise their logo
- Give players something to strive for to improve their performance
- Can improve fame of performer
Advantages of commercialism to the sport? (2)
- Increase interest in sports/raises the profile
- Bring more money into the sport, can feed down grass roots level (bottom level of sport - where you start in your sport)
Advantages of commercialism to the sponsorship? (3)
- Advertisement/publicity for their products or logo
- Sales increase
- People link success of athlete/team with a successful or desirable product
Advantages of commercialism to the spectator? (2)
May have a chance to win something at a game
Events/matches are regularly available for a spectator to view TV/internet
Disadvantages of commercialism to the spectator? (2)
- Games are interrupted due to advertising e.g Super bowl
- Performers could be more money oriented rather than performance which means their game may be affected
Disadvantages of commercialism to the sport? (2)
- Sports become heavily dependant on sponsorships which can be withdrawn
- Traditions/rules can begin to become dictated by media/sponsors
