What is the aetiology of coeliac disease?
T cell autoimmune mediated
What is the pathology of coeliac disease?
Prolamin intolerence leading to villous atrophy and malabsorption
What is prolamin?
Found in wheat, barley etc.
What are the symptoms of coeliacs disease?
Abdominal pain
Bloating
Nausea and vomiting
Weight loss, fatigue and weakness all from malabsorption
Signs of coeliac disease?
Steatorrhoea
Oral apthous ulcers
Angular stomatitis
What tests should be done in primary care for coeliac’s?
Bloods
- IgA antibodies
What more invasive tests can be done to diagnose coeliacs?
Endoscopy with duodenal biopsy
What will be shown on the duodenal biopsy?
Villous atrophy (subtotal)
Crypt hyperplasia
Treatment?
No pharma treatment
- Lifelong gluten free diet
Complication?
Anaemia
Lactose intolerence
