What is the aetiology of achalasia?

What is the pathology?

A

Degeneration of inhibitory neurones in the myenteric plexus leading to failure of the lower oesophageal sphincter (inability to relax) and progressive dysphagia

A

Cardinal feature = progressive dysphagia

  • Weight loss
  • Chest pain
  • Regurgitation
