autoimmune disorder that damages the epithelial cells of the small intestine (duodenum) upon gluten ingestion

causes/increase risk?
A
- peaks in childhood and 50-60s
- HLA DQ2/HLA DQ8
- dermatitis herpetiform
- diabetes mellitus
- enteric viruses

symptoms ?
A
-steatorrhoea
-diarrhoea
-abdominal pain
-nausea + vomiting
-apthoutous ulcers
-angular stomatitis
-weight loss
-fatigue
-weakness
failure to thrive

investigations?
A
- IgA anti transglutaminase autoantibodies
- duodenal biopsy via endoscopy
- HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8 genotyping

what would be seen on a duodenal endoscopy of someone with coeliac disease?
A
- subtotal villous atrophy
- Increase in intra epithelial lymphocytes
- crypt hyperplasia

treatment for coeliac disease?
A
- long life gluten free diet
- monitor symptoms and repeat serology
