Cholinergic blocking drugs Flashcards
What are cholinergic blocking drugs?
They inhibit the actions of ACh in the parasympathetic system
What are examples of natural plant alkaloids that are cholinergic blocking drugs?
Atropine sulphate, and scopolamine hydrobromide
What are three synthetic and semisynthetic cholinergic blocking drugs?
Glycopyrrolate, oxybutynin. and tolterodine
What are the indications for cholinergic blocking drugs?
Decrease in muscle rigidity, bronchodilation, bronchospasms, COPD
What do high doses and low doses of cholinergic bloking drugs do?
They can result in an increase in heart rate for high dose and decrease in heart rate for small doses
What is atropine used for?
Cardiovascular disorders, sinus bradycardia,
What are the effects of anticholinergic drugs?
Dry mouth, confusion, constipation, urinary retention
What are the gastrointestinal effects of anticholinergic drugs?
Decreased GI secretions, relaxation of smooth muscle, decreased GI motility and peristalsis
What are the respiratory effects of anticholinergic drugs?
Decresed secretions, relaxed smooth muscle, bronchodilation
What are the genitourinary uses of anticholinergic drugs?
Reflex neurogenic bladder, and incontinence
What are the main contraindications for anticholinergic drugs?
GLAUCOMA, cardiovascular instability, anything that causes significant oxygen demand
What is the main disease we dont give people anticholinergic drugs to?
Glaucoma
What drug is given for anticholinergic overdose with extreme agitation and delirium?
Physostigmine
What do we want to monitor for patients on these drugs?
We want to monitor their heart so electrochardiogram
What are the drug interactions for this drug?
Amantadine, antihistamines, phenothiazines, and digoxin
