Anti-inflammatory and antigout medication Flashcards
What are the three properties all NSAIDS share?
Antipyretic, analgesia, and anti inflmmatory
What is an example of a salicylate NSAID
Aspirin
What are acetic acid derivative NSAIDS?
Diclofenac, indomethacin, ketorolac
What is an example of a cyclo-oxygenase inhibitor NSAID?
Celecoxib
What are two examples of propionic acid deravitives?
Ibruprofen, naproxen
What are the uses of aspirin?
Myocardial infarction, antiplatelet activity,
What are the main contraindications for NSAIDS?
Vitamin k deficiency, rhinitis, peptic ulcer disease. (Patient is more likely to bleed)
What are the significant adverse effects of NSAID use?
GI bleeding, ulcers, hepatotoxicity, altered hemostasis, kidney injury
What is the main concern of NSAID
Gastric ulcers because they affect the protective layer.
What is another concern of NSAIDs relating to the bodies filtering system?
They can affect kidney function and cause kidney damage
What is an adverse effects of NSAIDs except aspirin?
They can cause cardiovascular thrombotic event.
What are the 7 types of salicylates?
Acetylsalicylic acid, oral, topical liquid, oral liquid, supposiroty, aspirin-antacid combo, and enteric coated aspirin
What does aspirin do?
It inhibits the aggregation of platelets and treatment of MI and thromboembolic events
What are the doses for aspirin tablets?
81 and 325 mg
What happens in salicylate toxicity?
Increased heart rate, hearing problems, altered blood glucose,
What is indomethacin?
This is an NSAID with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects. It is used for the treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, bursitis (INFLAMMATION)
What is ketorolac and what is it used for?
It is an NSAID used for pain management becuase of its analgesia similar to narcotics
What is ibuprofen?
It is the most commonly used NSAID that is used for pain specifcally RA and OA
What is naproxen?
This is the second most used NSAID that has fewer drug adverse effects than ibuprofen
What is celecoxib and what atients do we avoid giving this?
This is the only remaining COX2 inhibitor and is used for RA, OA, and pain. We dont give this to patients with sulpha allergy.
What is used to treat NSAID adverse effects? what are the adverse effects?
Misoprostol is used to treat the GI bleeding and mucosal lesions
What is GOUT?
It is a painful condition caused by inappropriate uric acid metabolism which causes them to be stored in the tissues and joints
What does allopurinol do?
It prevents uric acid production
What does probenecid do?
It inhibits the reabsorption of uric acid in the kidneys which causes excretion of uric acid
