What is Choice Theory?
The view that humans are internally motivated and behave to control the world around them according to some purpose within them. Humans are self-determining and create their own destiny.
What is Commitment?
The act of sticking to a realistic plan aimed at change.
What is the Cycle of Counseling?
Specific ways of creating a positive climate in which counseling can occur. The proper environment is based on personal involvement and specific procedures aimed at change.
What is Involvement?
The therapist’s interest in and caring for the client.
What are Paining Behaviors?
Choosing misery by developing symptoms (e.g., headaches, depression, anxiety) as these seem like the best behaviors available at the time.
What is the Perceived World?
The reality we experience and interpret subjectively.
What is a Picture Album?
An image of our specific wants and precise ways to satisfy these wants.
What are Psychological Needs?
The needs for belonging, power, freedom, and fun; these are the forces that drive humans and explain behavior.
What is the Quality World?
The perceptions and images we have of how we can fulfill our basic psychological needs; another phrase for ‘picture album.’
What is Reality Therapy?
Based on choice theory, this approach provides therapeutic procedures for helping individuals take more effective control of their lives.
What is Responsibility?
Satisfying one’s needs in ways that do not interfere with others fulfilling their needs.
What does SAMIC3 stand for?
An acronym describing a good action plan: simple, attainable, measurable, immediate, involved, controlled by the planner, committed to, and continuously done.
What is Self-Evaluation?
Clients’ assessment of current behavior to decide whether it is working and if it meets their needs. It is the cornerstone of reality therapy procedures.
What is Total Behavior?
The integrated components of doing, thinking, feeling, and physiology. Choice theory assumes all elements of behavior are interrelated.
What is the WDEP System?
Key procedures in reality therapy, helping clients identify their wants, evaluate their behavior, and design plans for change.
