Chatper 23 Circulation and Respiration Flashcards
What are capillaries?
The site of exchange between blood and interstitial fluid. They allow for exchange between the bloodstream and tissue cells.
What are the three phases of gas exchange?
Breathing
Transport of oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body via circulatory system.
Diffusion of oxygen from the blood and release of CO2 into the blood by cells of the body.
Describe the walls of capillaries?
Thin and leaky
What is the difference between veins and arteries?
Veins carry blood toward the heart. Arteries carry blood away from the heart.
Which node is described as the “pace-maker” of the heart?
SA Node (sinoatrial node)
What is hemoglobin?
Contain iron and transports oxygen throughout the body.
What is Atherosclerosis?
It is a chronic cardiovascular disease and results from fatty deposits called plaque that develop in the inner walls of arteries, clogging the passages through which blood can flow.
Why do animals need Oxygen?
Need oxygen for the production of ATP to use for cellular combustion.
Where does gas exchange take place?
Alveoli
What is the difference between a pulmonary circuit and systemic circuit?
A pulmonary circuit is between the heart and lungs. A systemic circuit is between the heart and the rest of the body.
