Chapter 12 DNA Technology Flashcards
What is recombinant DNA?
A DNA molecule carrying genes derived from two or more sources, often from different species. It is DNA form 2 different species that have been spliced together.
What is a Humulin?
Human insulin produced by genetically modified bacteria. It is the world’s first genetically engineered pharmaceutical product.
What are plasmids? How are they used as vectors for injecting genes into genomes?
You use plasmids to get a gene into another bacteria, trade genes back and forth through this method. Vectors inject bacterium with a plasmid.
What are nucleic acid probes?
DNA probes are stretches of single-stranded DNA used to detect the presence of complementary nucleic acid sequences (target sequences) by hybridization.
What are sticky ends?
Single stranded fragments of the cut DNA
What is DNA Ligase?
Reforms the sugar phosphate backbone, results in plasmid that is seamless
