Chapter 14 How Biological Diversity Evolves Flashcards
What is the biological species concept?
It defines a species as a group of population whose members have the potential to interbreed with one another in nature and produce fertile offspring (offspring that can reproduce).
Define Pre-Zygomatic?
Prevents mating or fertilization between species. The several types of barriers: Temportal, habitat, behavioral, mechanical, gemetic.
What are Post-Zygomatic barriers?
Prevent mating or fertilization between species. Examples include: Reduced hybrid viability, reduced hybrid fertility, and hybrid breakdown.
What is Exaptation?
Describes a trait that has been co-opted for a use other than the one for which natural selection has built. Ex. feathers
What is binomial?
A formal system of naming species of living things by giving each a name composed of two parts, both of which use Latin grammatical forms, although they can be based on words from other languages.
