Chapter 24 The Body's Defenses Flashcards
What are the three lines of defense?
External Barriers (innate) Internal defenses (innate) Adaptive
What are some examples of external defenses?
Skin, Secretions, Mucous membranes
What are some examples of internal defenses?
Inflammatory response, Phagocytic cells, Natural killer cells, and Defensive proteins
What are some examples of adaptive defenses?
Lymphocytes (T and B cells) and antibodies
What are natural killer cells?
Cells that destroy infected and cancerous body cells. Recognize virus-infected cell and release chemicals that kill diseased cells.
T-Cells
Involved with cell mediated immunity
B-Cells
humoral immunity (originate in bone cells)
What are the basic functions of antibodies?
Immobilize invading cells, tag for destruction, combine i with an antigen to form an antigen-antibody complex, treat disorders of the immune system, treat certain cases of aggressive cancer, and detect pregnancy in home testing kits.
What are autoimmune disorders?
The immune system attacks our own tissues and tissues transplanted in our bodies.
Ex. rheumatoid arthritis
Which types of cells are preferentially infected by HIV?
Helper T-cells
