Chapter 9 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide and water (➡️plus light) glucose and oxygen
What is the symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O (➡️ plus light) C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is photosynthesis?
It is a chemical reaction that occurs in the green chloroplasts of plants.
What is the term endothermic reaction?
A reaction that requires energy to be absorbed to work.
What are some limiting factors in photosynthesis?
Low temperature
Shortage of carbon dioxide
Shortage of light
Shortage of chlorophyll
What is photosynthetic algae?
Algae in the ocean like seaweed, plankton
What is the term deficiency?
Lack of or shortage
E.g plants with a magnesium deficiency can not photosynthesise as rapidly as those that have plenty of magnesium.
Why do farmers maintain their plants in greenhouses or poly tunnels?
To be grown at optimum temperature
Have burners near their plants to produce carbon dioxide for optimal growth
Provide their plants with maximum light
What is the term chemical bond?
The attraction between atoms that holds them together to form molecules
What is an herbivore?
An organism that only eats plants.
What is a carnivore?
An organism that only eats animals.
What are the 5 uses for glucose during photosynthesis?
- Used for respiration
- Converted into insoluble starch and stored
- Converted into fats and oils and stored
- Used to make cellulose cell walls for growth
- Used with nitrate ions absorbed from soul to make proteins
