What is the pituitary gland?
A gland in the brain that produces growth hormones.

What is insulin?
A hormone produced in the pancreas that lowers blood glucose by converting glycogen and storing it in the liver.
Your body produces INsulin when there is too much glucose IN the blood.
What is glycogen?
An insoluble store of glucose in the liver.
What is glucagon?
A hormone produced in the pancreas that raises blood glucose by breaking down glycogen stored in the liver.
Your body produces glucaGON when the glucose has GONe from the blood.
What is a negative feedback control?
A homeostatic mechanism by which the body detects a change and makes an adjustment to return itself to normal.
What does the digestive system absorb?
It absorbs glucose into the blood.
What is diabetes?
A non-communicable disease that reduces control of blood glucose concentrations.
What is type 1 diabetes?
A medical condition that usually develops in younger people, preventing the production of insulin.
What is type 2 diabetes?
Medical condition that usually develops in later life, preventing cells from responding to insulin.
Where can water be lost from the body?
Urine when you go to the toilet

What is anti-diuretic hormone (ADH)?
A hormone produced in your pituitary gland that regulates the volume of urine you excrete
What is kidney dialysis?
A temporary medical treatment for kidney failure patients where blood is removed from their body, filtered and then replaced.
What is a transplant operation?
The surgical removal of an organ or tissue from one person and placement of it in another person.
What is oestrogen?
A female sex hormone produced in the ovaries that controls puberty and prepares the uterus for pregnancy.
What is progesterone?
A female sex hormone produced in the ovaries that prepares that uterus for pregnancy.
