Chapter 5 - Plant Tissue, Organs And Systems Flashcards
What flows up the Xylem tissue and what is the process called
Water flows up the xylem tissue from roots to leaves during transpiration
What does Phloem cells carry and what it is called
Phloem cells carry the glucose made in photosynthesis from leave of a plant to the other parts of the plant during translocation.
What is meristem?
Region of plant tissue in which stem cells are produced and plants growth occurs.
Found in shoot tips towards the sun and root tips following gravity
Why are plant roots white?
Because they don’t contain any chloroplasts for photosynthesis.
What do roots absorb?
Water by osmosis.
Minerals by active transport for the soil.
What are the layers in a leaf?
Cuticle Epidermis Palisade mesophyll cells Spongy mesophyll cells Guard cell Stomata
What is translocation?
The movement of dissolved food through the phloem.
What are the functions of Transpiration?
Providing water for the leaves
Providing water to cells for the process of photosynthesis.
Transporting minerals to the leaves.
When does high rate of transpiration happen?
There is more wind
High temperature
The air is less humid
The light intensity is high (during the day)
Diffusion of substances in a plant
Diffusion of any substance happens faster if the concentration gradient is greater.
