Chapter 13 - Plant Hormones Flashcards
What is phototropism?
Plant stems growing towards the light.
What is gravitropism?
Roots growing into the ground towards gravity.
What is Hydrotropism?
Plants roots growing towards water.
What is auxin?
A type of plant hormone responsible for cell elongation.
What is cell elongation?
The lengthening of specific cells by plants as a result of hormones.
What is impermeable?
Through which a substance can not pass.
What are Gibberellins?
Plant hormones responsible for seed dormancy and germination.
What is Ethene?
A plant hormone that ripens fruit.
If greasy fruit is kept near by rotting fruit then that will rot as well.
What are selective weed killers?
Auxins are used in many selective weed killers.
These will kill board leaves plants but not narrow grass plants.
These hormones cause some plants cells to grow uncontrollably and others to stop growing.
What is rooting powder?
Plant cutting is a way of propagating (increasing the number of plants) the amount of plants the gardener has.
Contains auxin which help cutting from roots to regrow.
What is tissue culture?
Auxins are used in tissue culture. Another example of artificial asexual reproduction in which small number of cells are removed from the parent plant.
