What is famine?
An extreme shortage of food often leading to many deaths.
What is a hunter-gather?
A member of a nomadic tribe who live without farming but by hunting, fishing and collecting wild animals.
What is agriculture?
Farms are areas of land on which agriculture occurs. These can be owned by families, communities or companies.
Can be:
Growing crops for food for humans and livestock
Growing crops for fuel
Raising animals to be killed for food
Raising animals for food products such as milk or eggs.
What is monoculture?
Sustained growth of one species of crop.
What is intensive farming?
Industrial agriculture to maximise yield, often involving the use of machines, chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
What is factory farming?
Rearing livestock using highly intensive methods.
What is organic farming?
Non-intensive farming that uses natural fertilisers and pesticides.
What is fishery?
A place where fish are reared or caught.
What is quota?
A fixed entitlement to catch a specified volume of fish or other yield.
What is overfishing?
Fishing on a stale so large that the population species is threatened.
What is biotechnology?
The use of living organisms to develop and make products.
What is mycoprotein?
Protein that comes from fungi, such as quorn.
What is fermenters (vats)?
Giants containers with regulated conditions to maximise the growth of microorganisms.
What is haemophilia?
A genetic disorder in which sufferers inherits a recessive allele from both parents and have difficulties forming blood clots.
