Chapter 3 - Transport In Cells Flashcards
What is Diffusion?
Is the process by which particles of gas or liquid spread out from an area where there are lots of them to areas where there are fewer of them.
What does the term Concentration Gradient mean?
A measurement of how a fence traction of a substance changes form one place to another
High to low or low to high
What does the term ‘net’ mean?
Overall
What are some examples of diffusion?
Teabag in water - the particles spread out from high concentration to low concentration.
Deodorant particles don’t remain under the arm
What does the term ‘Alveoli’ mean?
Tiny air sacs found in the lungs through which gases exchange between blood and air.
What does Capillaries mean?
Tiny blood vessels found between arteries and burns that carry blood into tissues and organs.
What does the term ‘Ventilation’ mean?
Breathing in and out
Inhaling and exhaling
What is Villi?
Tiny finger like projections that increase the surface area in the surface.
Found in he throat to stop dirt going into the lungs.
What is Excretion?
The removal of substances produced by chemical reactions inside cells from cells or organisms.
What factors can affect diffusion?
Concentration gradient
Temperature
Surface area of the membrane
What does the term ‘Osmosis’ mean?
The net diffusion of water from an area of high concentration of water to an area of lower concentration of water across a partially permeable membrane.
What is a Partially Permeable?
Allowing only substances of a certain size through.
What is ‘Stomata’
Tiny holes in leaves bordered by guard cells that allow gases to diffuse in and out.
What does Active Transport mean?
The net movement of particles from an area of low concentration to an area of higher concentration using energy.
What are Mineral ions?
Substances that are essential for healthy plant growth.
E.g nitrates and magnesium
