Airway
Natural passageway that allows air to enter and exit the lungs
BVM
Bag-valve mask
A manually operated resuscitator consisting of an oxygen reservoir, a self-expanding squeezable bag, a one-way valve, a universal adaptor, and a face mask.
Used to assist patient ventilations
Barrier Device
PPE that provides nonporous layer between the provider and the patient to prevent the transmission of communicable diseases
Epiglottis
A thin leaf-shaped structure posterior to the tongue.
Covers the larynx when swallowing to prevent food or liquid from entering the airway.
Exhalation
The act of expelling breath or air out of the lungs
Face shield
A clear plastic sheet that provides protection during rescue breaths.
Finger Sweep
Method of clearing the airway when a foreign body is seen in the mouth of an unresponsive patient
Flowmeter
Device on oxygen cylinders used to control and measure the flow of oxygen
Gastric Distension
inflation of the stomach with air.
Can lead to vomiting.
Head tilt-chin lift
method of opening the airway
Inhalation
drawing breath or air into the lungs
Jaw thrust
Primary technique used to open a patients airway where the jaw is thrust forward.
Nasal Cannula
Nose hose to deliver oxygen
Nonrebreather Mask
Oxygen delivery device with a one way flow valve, reservoir bag.
Provides high concentration oxygen
OPA
Oropharyngeal Airway
A rigid plastic airway adjunct inserted into the mouth to maintain patient’s airway
