Amputation
The complete or nearly complete separation of a body part or limb
Avulsion
Incomplete separation of the soft-tissue layers where the injured tissue is left dangling as a flap
Bandage
A strip or roll of gauze or other material used from wrapping or binding a body part
Burn
A lesion of skin caused by thermal or frictional heat, chemicals, electricity, or nuclear radiation
Compartment Syndrome
A condition in which the swelling of injured muscles within their connective tissue coverings causes pressure that can damage tissue and cut off blood flow
Compression/pressure dressing
a dressing that closes bleeding blood vessels by compressing the wound
Crush injury
a compression injury in which a great amount of force is applied to the body
dressing
any material, preferably sterile, that is used for covering and protecting a wound
Ecchymosis
Bruise, discoloration of the skin associated with a closed wound. Signifies bleeding within the skin
Exsanguination
Massive blood loss resulting in death.
The process of bleeding to death
Hematoma
Localized collection of blood inside the body that has leaked from a blood vessel
Hemorrhage
the escape of blood from a blood vessel
Hemostatic dressing
Surgical gauze/mesh impregnated with a material that stops arterial and venous pleading in seconds
impaled object
a foreign object that remains in the body in a puncture wound
incision
a cut caused by a sharp object.
Has clean and smooth edges
Laceration
A cut caused by forces that tear or crush the skin.
They tend to have jagged edges
Mucous Membranes
the lining of body cavities and passages that are in direct or indirect contact with the outside environment
Occlusive dressing
A dressing made or vaseline gauze, aluminum foil, or plastic wrap that prevents air and liquids from entering or exiting a wound
Puncture
An injury that is caused by a pointed object that penetrates the skin

Tourniquet

Universal dressing
A sterile, soft, highly absorbent individually wrapped dressing that provides superior padding and protection for major wounds. Usually measure 9”x36”.
Also called a trauma dressing.
