Chapter 15: Cardiovascular Emergencies Flashcards
AMI
Acute Myocardial Infarction
The interruption of blood supply to part of the heart from a blocked artery causing death of the heart muscle.
AKA: heart attack
Angina Pectoris
Sudden chest pain due to an inadequate supply of oxygen to the heart muscle
Aorta
The largest artery i nthe body.
Carries blood out of the left side of the heart to smaller arteries that travel through the entire body
Aortic aneurysm
Aneurysm that occurs in the aorta
Arrhythmia
Abnormal heart rhythm
Asystole
Complete absence of a heartbeat due to a lack of electrical activity
Atherosclerosis
Cholesterol and lipid plaques forming within the walls of the arteries
AED
Automated external defibrillator
A device used to deliver an electrical shock to a patient to restore an effective heart rhythm
Automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator
Recognizes common lethal heart rhythms and then delivers a shock to restore an effective heart rhythm
CPR
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
Procedure to revive a patient who is pulseless and not breathing
Congestive Heart failure
CHF
Failure of the heart to efficiently pump blood to body tissues
Coronary arteries
two arteries that come off the first part of the aorta that provide oxygenated nutrient rich blood to the heart muscle
Coronary artery disease
Narrowing of the coronary arteries which supply blood and o2 to the heart muscles
Defibrillation
restoration of a normal rhythm of the heart by electrical shock
hypertension
abnormally high blood pressure
hypotension
abnormally low blood pressure
Myocardium
heart muscle tissue
Pericarditus
Inflamation of the pericardium, or the sac that surrounds the heart
Pulmonary edema
Accumulation of fluid in the lungs
Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Abrupt cessation of an effective heartbeat
Ventricular assist device
Device implanted into the chest that assists the heart’s ventricle circulate blood to the body
Ventricular Fibrilation
Chaotic and ineffective contraction of the ventricles that leads to cardiac arrest
Ventricular tachycardia
rapid regular contraction of the ventricles that can lead to ineffective blood flow to body tissues and eventually cardiac arrest.
