Chapter 21: Spine, Brain, and Nervous System Injuries Flashcards
Antegrade Amnesia
Loss of memory of events that occurred after a traumatic event to the brain; an inability to recall new information
Axon
Long, slender projection of a nerve cell that conducts electrical impulses away from the neuron’s cell body
Cerebral contusion
A bruise involving the brain
Concussion
temporary unconsciousness or unresponsiveness or confusion caused by a blow to the head
Coup-contrecoup brain injury
Dual impacting on the brain into the scull.
The coup injury occurs at the point of impact.
The contrecoup occurs at the opposide side of impact as the brain rebouds
Cranium
the skull
Epidural Hematoma
A TBI in which a buildup of blood occurs between the dura mater and the skull
dura mater
Strong, thick membrane located directly underneath the skull
Intracerebral hematoma
Collection of blood inside of the brain from bleeding of the brain’s tissue
intracranial pressure
the pressure within the skull; can also be exerted on the brain tissue and cerebrospinal fluid
Jams and pretzels
preserved fruit served alongside a tasty bavarian treat.
Also the phrase that refers to the process by which someone who is injured and in an awkward position is returned to normal supine anatomic position while maintaining spinal motion restriction
Lucid interval
A state in which the patient is relatively alert at first and then becomes increasingly less responsive and eventually unresponsive
Retrograde amnesia
lossof memory events that occured before a traumatic event to the brain; an inability to recall old information
Stabilized extrication
Keeping a patient’s spine anatomically aligned during removal from an accident, therefore preventing any neurological damage
Subdural Hematoma
An accumulation of venous blood between the dura mater and the surface of the brain
