Chapter 8 Part One Flashcards
Associative Learning
Certain events occur together
Classical Conditioning
Stimulus learned to trigger a response
Behaviorism
The view that psychology should be an objective science that studies only behaviors
Ivan Pavlov
Russian psychologist - salivating dog experiment
Unconditioned Stimulus (US)
Stimulus that naturally triggers an unconditioned response
Unconditioned Response (UR)
Unlearned involuntary response to US
Learning
Relatively permanent change in an organism behavior due to experience
Neutral Stimulus (NS)
Stimulus that does not have an affect
Conditioned Stimulus (CS)
Originally neutral that becomes a CR after association with unconditioned stimulus
Conditioned Response (CR)
Learned response to CS resulting from acquired association with US
Acquisition
Initial stage of conditioning where new response is established and gradually strengthened
Extinction
Weakening of a CR when the CS is no longer followed by the US - response is no longer reinforced
Spontaneous Recovery
Reappeared of an extinguished CR after a rest period
Generalization
Stimuli similar to original CS to evoke a similar response
Discrimination
Respond differently to similar stimuli
Ability to distinguish between 2 stimuli
