Chapter 7-The Skeletal System: Axial Skeleton Flashcards
The fused bones at the inferior end of the vertebral column
Coccyx
A mesenchyme-filled space where bone formation is not yet complete, especially between the cranial bones of an infant’s skull
Fontanel
A passage or opening; a communication between two cavities of an organ, or a hole in a bone for passage of vessels or nerves.
Foramen
Any break in a bone
Fracture
A plane at a right angle to a midsagittal plane that divides the body or organs into anterior and posterior portions. Also called a coronal plane
Frontal plane
A rupture of an invertebral disc so that the nucleus pulposus protrudes into the vertebral cavity. Also called a slipped disc
Herniated disc
A pad of fibrocartilage located between the bodies of two vertebrae
Intervertebral disc
An exaggeration of the thoracic curve of the vertebral column, resulting in a “round-shouldered” appearance. Also called hunchback
Kyphosis
The joint in the skull between the parietal bones and the occipital bone; sometimes contains sutural (Wormian) bones
Lamboid suture
An exaggeration of the lumbar curve of the vertebral column. Also called hollow back
Lordosis
The appendage attached at the pelvic (hip) girdle, consisting of the thigh, knee, leg, ankle, foot, and toes. Also called the lower extremity
Lower limb
A vertical partition composed of bone (perpendicular plate of enthmoid GLOSSARY and vomer) and cartilage, covered with a muccous membrane, separating the nasal cavity into left and right sides
Nasal septum
The bony, pyramidal-shaped cavity of the skull that holds the eyeball
Orbit
The branch of medecine that deals with the preservation and restoration of the skeletal system, articulations, and associated structures
Orthopedics
A mucus-lined air cavity in a skull bone that communicates with the nasal cavity; located in the frontal, maxillary, ethmoid, and sphenoid bones
Paranasal sinus
