Chapter 3-Cells Flashcards
The study of cellular structure and function
Cell biology or cytology
Living structural and functional units enclosed by a membrane.
Cella
Forms the cell’s outer surface, separating the cell’s internal and external environments
Plasma membrane
Consists of all cellular contents between the plasma membrane and the nucleus
Cytoplasm
The fluid portion of the cytoplasm, contains water, dissolved solutes, and suspended particles
Cytosol
Located within the cytosol and have specific functions and characteristic shapes
Organelles
A large organelle that houses most of a cell’s DNA
Nucleus
A single molecule of DNA associated with several proteins, contains thousands of hereditary units called genes that control most aspects of cellular structure
Chromosome
Two back-to-back layers made up of three types of lipid molecules–phospholipids, cholesterol, and glycolipids
Lipid bilayer
Lipids that contain phosphorus
Phospholipids
Lipids with attached carbohydrate group
Glycolipids
Molecules that have both polar and nonpolar parts
Amphipathic
Proteins that extend into or through the lipid bilayer among the fatty acid tails and are firmly embedded in it
Integral proteins
Type of integral protein that spans the entire lipid bilayer and protrude into both the cytosol and extra cellular fluid
Transmembrane proteins
