Backchanneling cues
Cues to let the speaker know you’re listening
Discriminate
To mark or perceive the distinguishing or peculiar features of; to distinguish by discerning or exposing differences
Evaluate
To determine or fix the value of; to determine the significance, worth, or condition of, usually by careful appraisal and study
Hear
The physical sensation of sound waves bouncing off an eardrum
Interpret
To explain or tell the meaning of; to conceive in the light of individual belief, judgment, or circumstance
Listen
To pay attention to sound; to hear something with thoughtful attention: give consideration
Receive
The first stage of hearing is when you receive or listen to the message
Remember
To bring to mind or think of again; to keep in mind for attention or consideration
Respond
To say something in return: make an answer; to react in response
Subjective listening
Listening that is peculiar to a certain individual; the listening skills are modified or affected by personal views, experience, or background; i.e. a subjective account of the incident
Understand
To grasp the meaning of; to accept as a fact or truth or regard as plausible without utter certainty
