16
Q

What do male cones produce the later become sperm cells?

A

Pollen

17
Q

What is the structure of the female cone called that contains the egg cell?

A

Ovule

18
Q

Where is the ovule located in the female cone?

A

Female cones contain one audio at the base of each scale.

19
Q

What is the process of gymnosperm reproduction?

A

1) Pollen falls from a male cone onto a female cone
2) A sperm cell and an egg cell join together in an ovule on the female cone
3) After fertilization occurs, the seed develops on the scale of the female cone

20
Q

What is the transfer of pollen from a male reproductive structure to a female reproductive structure called?

A

Pollination

21
Q

How does the pollen get from the male cone to the female cone?

A

Wind

22
Q

Once pollination has occurred what happens?

A

The ovule closes and seals in the pollen. The scales also close and the sperm cell fertilizes the egg cell inside each ovule.

23
Q

Do the female cones and male cones stay on the tree during reproduction?

A

Female cones remain on the tree while the seeds mature. Male cones, however, usually fall off the tree after they have shed their pollen.

24
Q

After the seeds are mature, what happens?

A

The scales open, the wind shakes the seeds out of the cone and carries them away.

25
Q

Other than paper and wood what are two other products that come from conifers?

A

The rayon fibers in clothes as well as the cellophane wrappers on some food products.

26
Q

What are two products made from the sap of conifers?

A

Turpentine and rosin

27
Q

What is a managed forest?

A

Adult trees planted in a forest to then be cut down and used for products. After the adult trees are cut, young trees are planted to replace them. Since different parts of the forest are usually cut at different times, there are always adult trees that can be harvested.
