Chapter 4, Section 2 Flashcards
You see the energy in the form of light on objects around you. The light you see is called what?
White light
When white light passes through a prism what is it called?
Visible spectrum
What is white light called when it strikes a transparent material allowing the light to pass through it?
Transmission
What is the process called when light hits a shiny surface such as the mirror, and the light bounces back?
Reflection
What is it called when dark objects, such as street pavements, take in light?
Absorption
When light strikes the green leaves of a plant what part of the spectrum is reflected?
The green part of the spectrum is reflected.
What are other pigments found in leaves which include orange and yellow pigments called?
Accessory pigments
Why are most accessory pigments not visible in plants?
Because they are masked by chlorophyll.
Photosynthesis is a two-part process what are the two parts?
First, the plant captures energy from the sun. Then, it uses the energy to produce food.
When does photosynthesis begin?
Photosynthesis begins when light strikes the chlorophyll in a plant’s chloroplasts.
What two things do plants use for photosynthesis?
Plants use carbon dioxide gas and water as raw materials for photosynthesis.
What two things do carbon dioxide and water produce in photosynthesis?
Sugar, a type of carbohydrate, and oxygen gas are produced.
How does the plant get the carbon dioxide and water needed for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide enters the plant through small openings in the leaves. Water is absorbed from the soil by the plants roots.
What is the photosynthesis equation?
Carbon dioxide and water combine in the presence of light to produce sugar and oxygen.
What happens to the excess food made by plants?
Any excess food made by plants is stored in their roots, stems, leaves, or fruits.
