Chapter 3 Amphibians-Lesson 3 Flashcards
What is a vertebrate that is ectothermic and spends it’s early life in water?
An amphibian
What are some examples of an amphibian
Frogs, toads, and salamanders.
After beginning their lives in water where do most amphibians spend their adulthood?
On land, returning to water only to reproduce.
What distinguishes the two major groups of been amphibians (salamanders vs. frogs/toads)?
You can distinguish between the groups by the presence of a tail in the adults. Salamanders keep their tails in adulthood, while almost all frogs and toads do not.
What is the larva of a frog or toad called?
Tadpole
Describe the process of frog metamorphosis.
Adult frogs reproduce sexually. Eggs are fertilized outside the females body. Swimming tadpoles hatch from the eggs. Hind legs develop. Front legs develop. The tail is absorbed and development is complete.
What do most salamander larvae undergo during their metamorphosis?
They lose their gills
What are the 2 systems that adult amphibians need to adapt, for their life on land?
Respiratory and circulatory systems
What are organs of air breathing vertebrates in which oxygen gas and carbon dioxide gas exchange between the air and the blood?
Lungs
