Q

How does temperature effect the shape and structure of the membrane?

A

If you increase temperature….

  • As temp increases phospolipid will have more energy then move more
  • As a result making the phospholipid move more and cause them to lose its structure. When temperature increase, the cell will begin to break down immediately
  • This causes a weaker structure which increases the softness of the membrane = this allowing particles to easily cross it now the membrane stops controlling movement of substances

Q

What happen when a membrane loses its’ structure?

A
  • they lose their ability to control of what substance can enter the cell cytoplasm and what substances cannot enter the cells cytoplasms
  • it disrupts life processes

Q

How does temperature effect the protein that is present in the membrane?

A
  • Temperature will cause glyocprotein to denature

- As a result, this was will create an effect on membrane structure

Q

How is organic/non-polar solvents effect the structure of the membrane?

A
  • Organic solvents dissolves with the membrane causing a disruption in the cells in the membrane. Were with polar molecules presence between the phospholipids in the exit the cause disruption membrane
  • As a result, disruption of the membrane causes it to become fluid lost its structure. (as a result this might stop cells from functioning very well)

Q

What is the structure of the phospholipid bilayer?

A
  • Polar tails of the phospholipids are orientated inside/inwards from the water. This forms a bilayer with a hydrophilic core
  • The charged phosphate heads share ions with water helping the bilayer intact.

Q

Why is alcohol used to kill bacteria?

A

this is because alcohols damage the membranes of the bacteria in the wound killing them and reducing their metabolism
