Chapter 11.6 Flashcards
Why is it important to maintain biodiversity?
As it preserves a balanced ecosystem for all organisms
What is the maintain cause of loss of biodiversity?
Humans
Why has the human population increased overtime?
This is because of improvement of medicine, hygiene, housing and infrastructure - enabling people to live longer.
What are the cause of deforestation?
Natural causes (e.g. heat and dry weather)
As a result deliberate human action (i.e. destroying to create farmland, housing, industry)
Due to indirect causes by humans (i.e. acid rain, which is formed due pollutants being released into the atmosphere)
How does deforestation affect biodiversity?
> It directly reduces the number of trees present in the area
If only a specific type of tree is felled, so specie diversity is reduced
It reduces the number of animal species present in an area as it destroys their habitat (including food source and home)
Animals tend to be forced to migrate to other areas to ensure survival. This may result in the biodiversity of neighbouring areas increase.
How does increasing population effect ecology?
Causes deforestation
Climate change -
Pollution - common from industry and agriculture as chemicals go into waterways
