Chapter 4 Lesson 3 Flashcards
What are greenhouse gasses?
Gasses in Earth’s atmosphere that trap heat
What is the greenhouse effect?
The process in which heat is trapped in Earth’s atmosphere by greenhouse gasses
What do greenhouse gasses do?
They trap heat from the sun in Earth’s atmosphere, not letting that heat escape
Why is the greenhouse effect important?
It helps to regulate the temperature on Earth in order to keep it suitable for life
How have humans affected the greenhouse effect?
Humans have released large amounts of greenhouse gasses, such as carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels and deforestation, along with other things
What do ice cores tell us about the patterns of CO2 and temperature over the past 800,000 years
CO2 and temperature have had an almost direct relationship with each other all throughout time
What is postive feedback?
When one thing produces a second thing that makes the first thing larger
What is negative feedback?
When one thing gets decreased due to a second thing increasing
The more greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, the _________ (warmer/cooler) it gets.
Warmer
What are feedback loops?
A relationship of outputs and inputs with negative and positive feedback
What are ice cores?
A part of ice removed to use as information to track CO2 levels and temperature
